"Delete" after import or paste Crash

Without fail, every time I delete an audio clip after importing and auditioning, crash. Copy and Paste, audition and delete, crash. The good news is that whetever state the project was in at the moment of crash is saved. Any thoughts?

Does it happen in any project or one in particular?

In the project I started, but I tried it in another "open" project and it did the same.
But I wonder if it because the material resides on an external USB drive that somehow the computer isn't able to cache properly and chokes when the off board sample is removed.
That's a long shot but not improbable.
