This is not a good idea, right?
  • Hi
I have this song 'Please Mr. Brahms' that I recorded most of the tracks first in Reason/Record...I want to move all those tracks seperatly to Ohmstudio to finish the song...but to get each individual track into ohmstudio, I have to 'export song' , first having soloed each individual track to get them seperate...so I have like, 11 tracks of each instrument exported down to audio...but because of the way I had to export each individual track in Reason to my desktop, they are very large...like 50mb....so if I drag all of the tracks from my desktop to ohmstudio with each track being seperate..., the song in ohmstudio is very large like 1 something GB....
this is not a good idea...right?....
In Reason I cannot find a way to export each individual track, and have them all line up in ohmstudio, with out doing it this way...Even tho it is only one instrument, the file is as large as the whole song because I had to solo each track to get it out of Reason...
If I then import all of the tracks seperatly into Ohmstudio this will make the song way TOO BIG....right?
    thanks

  • I guess what Im getting at is...is there a limit to the size of the project  (in GBs) that can be done on Ohmstudio...?....I dont want to exceed any size limits there may be...
    thanks

  • A 30 second WAV file is 30 seconds of samples, regardless of if it's mixed from one track or 200.  If you export 1 30 second sequence to a WAV file, you'll get 1 30 second WAV file.  If you export 200, you'll get 200 30 second WAV files - i.e. 200 times as much data.

So... it depends on what you want - do you want to work on the 11 tracks separately in OhmStudio as audio tracks?  If so, you're going to have 11 audio file to import...

I think it's more important to think about what OhmStudio is about -- collaboration.  Do you want everyone working on the project to have to download a complete CD's worth of data to work on your track?
  • Hey PLJ
Yeah, I want to import the 11 tracks separately into Ohmstudio as audio...and go from there...but the issue I was worried about (and maybe this is not even an issue) is that...each wave file no matter if it is just 20 seconds, still has the size of the whole song in Reason,  109MB...so If I import all 11 files it will be over a Gig....I was wondering if this is a no no cause of the size of server space this will take up?...or is all this going over my head .... as usual....

  • There's two ways of looking at this.

    1) You want 11 tracks of equal length so they all line up when imported.  In that case, they're all the same length = all the same number of samples.  Silence is still time is still samples is still size.

    2) You want 11 tracks that you have to manual align after importing.  In that case, open each in an audio editor like Audacity, chop off the leading and trailing silence, then import.  (You can get tools that automate the "chop off the leading and trailing silence", I think.)

But a 30 second track is 30 seconds of something, even if it's silence.  It's all sample space.
  • THanks man...Ill go with number 1....until told not to do so...he he
  • Now my OhmStudio won't start... gah...

-edit- Fixed: damn corrupt caches... -/edit-
I had another program accessing my Echo AudioFire when I ran OhmStudio; expectedly, it crashed.  However, it looks like it took out the caches whilst crashing...
  • That will do it....doah!!!
  • Hi Harry. Hi Peter.

There are no limit to the size of a Project. If that ever becomes the case, we'll let you know about it and probably offer some kind of tools to "clean up" a project.
You should do as Peter suggested and import your audio files simultaneously so that they all line up. Create a new project then select all the samples in your Explorer then drag & drop them below the "Master Rack" Track. This will create a new Rack for each audio file.

The main limitation is your upload speed. Uploading several hundreds of MB will of course require time.
Each audio file is compressed 3 times. While it is being uploaded, you can select an Audio Pattern and open the Inspector to see 3 progressbars: they correspond to the 3 compressed audio files.
You'll notice that the most compressed file is uploaded first, so that other members can download it as soon as it becomes available.
This is the reason why you can open a public project and start playback almost instantly eventhough you don't have all the samples contained in that project on your hard drive: the Ohm Studio quickly grabs the most compressed files starting with the ones that appear at the begening of the project.

I think that compression algorithms are very effective with audio files that contain large amount of silence... in theory.
So don't bother removing silence before importing your samples.

I hope that clears things up a little bit.
  • By the way, what version of Reason are you using?
Reason 6 has a nice feature to bounce mixer channels separately.

  • Thanks Orange Force for the info...and yes, Im using Reason6...so I will need to check out the bounce mixer channels separately...I noticed this in Reason...
So as I understand it the best way to do this is to shift/select all the tracks so that they download at the same time...and drop them below the 'master rack track' that is in the horizontal (left side) of ohm studio?...
Ill try this...but first Im going to check out the 'bounce mixer channels separately in Reason 6...thanks again guys
